Rules & Policies

Rules

These are the rules members are expected to abide by. These rules are also found at flipping.rocks/about.

  1. Don't be racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, fatphobic, etc., you know the drill. Don't interact with people if they've asked you to stop doing so. Don't be a "reply guy".

  2. Credit other creators appropriately when posting their work. No generative AI.

Do your best to only post images and other media that you have permission to use, and credit the original creators. Accounts (on flipping.rocks and elsewhere) that only exist to post other people's work without permission or adequate credit (i. e., picspam accounts) will be suspended.

Corollary: no LLM-written posts or media made with AI image or video generators.

  3. Use informative descriptions, hashtags, content warnings, etc., to allow people to filter out posts if necessary. Don't be a dick about it.

Use straightforward language in media descriptions, hashtags, content warnings, or just post text, so that people can filter out posts with keywords if they like. Consider using informative content warnings or marking media sensitive so that post content is hidden behind a click.

This can include commonly feared animals like bugs or snakes; potentially "graphic"/"not safe for work" content like gore or pornography; high-volume posts during events; extremely lengthy posts; and content that may be triggering for people with conditions like eating disorders or alcoholism.

Aim to stimulate people's curiosity and politely correct misconceptions, not shame them for fear or ignorance.

  4. Don't do/discuss doing/link to illegal shit.

For your own sake, if you are planning on breaking the law don't talk about it on here. Neither I nor this server's host are willing to go to court or jail for you.

Policies

These deal with how the server is run.

Flipping.rocks adheres to the Mastodon Server Covenant, which requires:

  1. Active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia
  2. Daily backups
  3. At least one other person with emergency access to the server infrastructure
  4. Commitment to give users at least 3 months of advance warning in case of shutting down

Active moderation

I respond to reports, regularly monitor for bad servers/users, and communicate with other admins. When it concerns a server with users who follow or are followed by flipping.rocks users, I ask our users for feedback. I will also let you know if I have to temporarily limit a server for spam.

You can read more about how server-wide muting and blocking (a.k.a. silencing and defederation) work, why servers generally get muted/blocked, and how to view posts on muted/blocked servers, here.

Backups

There are daily server backups, courtesy of our host fedi.monster.

That said, this is still a microblogging platform; it is not the place for high-res photos, long videos, or irreplaceable data. Photo uploads are limited to 8 MB and video/audio to 40 MB. If you would like help backing up your content or having it cross-posted to other platforms, let me know, and I'm happy to help you set it up.

Emergency contact person

In case I get hit by a bus, @brook@sunny.garden has access to all the relevant services: the admin backend, our host, the git repo this website is based on, and the web host that the flipping.rocks domain name is registered at.

Shutdown

If I ever decide to shut down the server, I'll give you at least 3 months' notice so you can export your data.
